Tas voor een man

(Western?) Apache pouch; tanned prairie dog skin, red and blue flannel, paints; l. (incl. fringe) 38 cm., w. (incl. fringe) 45 cm; ca. 1880. This pouch was collected in June/July 1883 at either San Carlos or Camp Apache, Arizona. It was catalogued as a tobacco pouch of prairie dog skin. It has a tangle of fringes around the edge, including some serrated tabs, some painted yellow or red; on the left side some of the fringes have individual metal tinklers attached, while on the right side there are fringes with two tinklers. The carrying strap is a piece of commercial cordage painted yellow. The flap is closed with a commercial button. The back of the pouch appears to have been covered with red flannel, and the front with blue; that on the flap is intact, but most of the cloth on both sides has been eaten away, and the revealed hide beneath is now thin and parchment like. This, and the presence on the back of the pouch of the small hide's tail and back feet, suggest that it was originally tanned with the hair on, and that perhaps dermestid beetles ate the fur, and clothes moths the flannel covers. In the 1930s, Western Apaches talked about storing tobacco, after it was harvested, in pouches made from the whole skin of a young deer, a fox, or of two Abert's squirrel (Sciurus aberti) hides sewn together (Ferg 1987:132). One can easily imagine the pouch that Ten Kate collected as being a man's personal tobacco pouch. Decorated buckskin pouches were used to carry, or sometimes store, any imaginable small personal items, including paint, pollen, playing cards, mirrors, amulets and tobacco. Pouches collected from both the San Carlos and Fort Apache areas in the early 1900s appear to exhibit a dichotomy between rectangular pouches with metal tinklers, and round pouches with very full buckskin fringes (Ferg 1987:97). The significance, if any, is unknown, and does not appear to hold for Ten Kate's sample of three pouches, one of which has both a full fringe and tinklers. It may be that decoration of pouches (and awl cases?) follows only very general patterns, and is far more open to individual expression and improvisation than has been recognized. Deze tabakszak is denkelijk gemaakt van een huid van een Prairiehond. De zak is herkenbaar als Apache door de franje, waarbij tussen de smalle banden ook snoeren aanwezig zijn. De zak kan ook voor andere voorwerpen gebruikt worden. Waarschijnlijk werden de minder decoratieve zakken gebruikt door mannen omdat de kralen teveel lawaai maakten bij de jacht of het plegen van overvallen. Het is niet zeker of de verschillende vormen (rond of rechthoekig) ook voorschrijven dat de zak enkel door respectievelijk een man of een vrouw gedragen kon worden. In Ferg (1996:97) hebben de ronde zakken geen tinnen kokertjes en de rechthoekige wel, wat gezien het bovenstaande een indicatie kan zijn dat de ronde tassen voor mannen waren. De hier getoonde zak heeft tinnen kokertjes maar is niet duidelijk rechthoekig van vorm. Bovendien zit de franje aan zowel de onderzijde als de beide zijkanten, net als bij de ronde zakken beschreven door Ferg. Het is daarom volgens Fergs redenering niet goed uit te maken of deze zak voor vrouwen of voor mannen is bedoeld. In de begindagen werd tabak geassocieerd met het zeggen van gebeden voor gezondheid, geluk en succes in de (herten)jacht. Alleen oudere mannen rookten tabak, die zij zelf verbouwd hadden. Later werd tabak toegankelijker en roken meer een seculiere aangelegenheid door de handel met blanken: ook jonge mannen en jongens gingen tabak roken (Ferg 1996:132).
