Quechquemitl

Borstgewaad Rare. AVH: In 1953 beschreef Dr. Irmgard Weitlaner de quechquemitls die gedragen werden in de otomí-dorpen Tenexco en Ixtololoya (beiden op half uur of driekwart uur loopafstand van Pantepec, Puebla): "Otomí women wear beautifully embroidered and brocaded small quechquemitl, very similar to those of San Gregorio (somewhat larger) but have the hectagon motives as border motives. The San Gregorio border motive consists of all-over small diamond designs rendered in orange, red and black wool mainly. [I] saw women come to Pantepec wearing them on their heads: quechquemitl folded inside out, forming little square cloth on top of head." De dracht werd gecompleteerd door een blouse, rok, faja en haarversiering: "nicely stitched manta camisas, stitched with sewing machine, wide patterns along breast and shoulders. Long white full manta skirt worn same way as Totonacs and Tepehuas, wide pattern at lower border in machine st.[ich] black and red colors, some green. Wear black wool Tepehua faja!! Very beautiful and graceful costume. Often supplemented by a rebozo. [They] braid lots of wide ribbons of different colors into hair, from ca. crown on head, same way of arrangement as Totonacs."
